Belchamp Bench
The Belchamp sits somewhere between a traditional garden bench and a daybed. Long enough to stretch out with a book, yet equally suited to conversation, it is intended as a place to slow down and enjoy the garden.
Inspired by the quiet character of English gardens, the design combines gently curved ends, ball details, with a slatted hardwood seat and a painted timber frame. Every piece is handmade in my Suffolk workshop using traditional mortise and tenon joinery and carefully selected timbers, before being finished for a long life outdoors.
The first pair of Belchamp benches were commissioned for the Thomas Gainsborough Garden, designed by Frederic Whyte in collaboration with Gainsborough's House for the RHS Sandringham Flower Show.

The Belchamp is built using traditional pegged mortise and tenon joinery and is designed to provide many years of service outdoors.
For painted benches, the frame and end panels are crafted from Accoya®, a modified timber renowned for its exceptional durability, dimensional stability and resistance to rot. Its remarkable performance in exterior conditions makes it an ideal material for painted garden furniture, helping to ensure the bench remains stable and beautiful through the changing seasons.
The slatted seat is made from solid European oak (Quercus robur), chosen for its strength, character and ability to weather gracefully over time.
The painted frame is finished in a high-grade exterior furniture paint and can be colour matched to any shade from the paint manufacturer of your choice, in finishes ranging from dead matt through to 50% gloss.
For those who prefer a natural timber finish, The Belchamp can also be made entirely in solid European or English oak (Quercus robur), or in the hardwood of your choice. Other timbers and finishes are available upon request.
