The ball-back chair is a distinctive result of traditional chair-making in the UK, originating in East Anglia in the 18th Century. Influenced by designers such as Chippendale, Hepplewhite, and Sheraton, the style evolved in this largely rural region, adopting a modest yet elegant design suitable for farmhouse kitchens, cottages, and Georgian townhouses.
While East Anglian chair making declined in the 20th Century, recent efforts have aimed to revive the style. I have been exploring and producing contemporary versions of Suffolk chairs, ensuring the continuation of this tradition in Suffolk.
